Tsonga needed just around two hours to knock off Dancevic 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 and give France an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five tie with Canada.

The French, who carried a 2-1 lead into Sunday, will now host a quarterfinal tie with the United States in April. The Americans completed a surprising 5-0 sweep of Switzerland earlier in the day.

Tsonga's scheduled opponent, Milos Raonic, pulled out of the match because of knee pain he felt following a doubles loss on Saturday.

Taking his place, Dancevic made 27 unforced errors -- and had the same number of winners -- while Tsonga fired nine aces and 41 winners against 20 unforced errors.

Canada's Vasek Pospisil and France's Gael Monfils were meeting in the other singles match Sunday to finish off the tie. Monfils replaced Julien Benneteau.

France owns nine Davis Cup titles, the last coming in 2001, while Canada has never reached a World Group final. France improved to 2-0 all-time against the Canadians, with the previous victory coming in Paris in 1966.

Many years ago, NFL games, as well as the more popular college games, used straight odds as a vehicle for betting. But in modern sports betting, a "pointspread" is used.

A NFL pointspreads are exactly that, a pre-established point difference between the two sides that will, for all intents and purposes, create a handicap that evens things out, and in doing so, produces comparable wagering activity on both sides of that proposition. So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.

In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.
